My #MeMadeMay Pledge

Although I only started sewing about a year ago (well, a little less than a year actually, I started in summer) my commitment to binge-watching the videos of sewing vloggers has meant that I have quite an in-depth knowledge of Me Made May, despite this being the first May that has passed since I’ve started sewing.

So – what is Me Made May? The idea (a wonderful idea at that) was born in the brain of Zoe Edwards of @sozoblog (on Instagram) eight years ago, and is a ‘challenge designed to encourage people who sew/ knit/ crochet/ refashion/ upcycle garments for themselves to wear and love them more.’ Each person taking part in #MMMay17 sets a challenge for themselves that has something to do with their handmade wardrobe, whether that is to wear a handmade item each day, one handmade item each week, or a crafty task – like upcycling three things in the month of May.

Which brings us to my pledge, which you can copy and paste from Zoe’s blog. Bear with me because it sounds very legal and like it could be an important document from the 1800s, but it’s the sort of phrasing that I need to make sure that I stick to my plan for Me Made May.

I, Harriet Johnson, of Hobbling Handmades, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May ’17. I endeavour to wear every handmade/ upcycled item of clothing I have in my wardrobe, and on other days to wear something I have bought second hand for the duration of May 2017.

Here’s a brief explanation of what I mean by that:

I don’t have as many hand-sewn items as others, so my plan is to wear EVERY SINGLE THING that I have ever made throughout May, so that I can make sure everything that I’ve made has a nice little outing, and so that I know what changes I want to make for the next time I use the pattern.

I already know that I haven’t made 31 items of clothing, and the amount of times that I’d have to re-wear everything might seem a little excessive. So, on days where I can’t wear something which I have made, I’ll be wearing a garment that I’ve purchased second-hand. Which I think sounds like a fair compromise.

So those are my plans for Me-Made-May! Let me know if you’ll be taking part and, if so, what you’ve pledged. Until next time, have a lovely week!

  1. Hello 🙂
I only started learning to sew in March this year, but like you have become pretty obsessed with it. I have pledged to participate but I only have a handful of items so far. My pledge was to wear two items of my own clothing a week & to make at least 4 new items by the end of May. Looking forward to watching your MMMay journey.
